Name: Mokusetsu "Kiki" Taku

Reason for the nickname:
The kanji for Mokusetsu's name can also be read as "Kiki." When they were young, Suiko saw Mokusetsu's name written in kanji and misread it. She still calls him Kiki from time to time.

Personality:
Mokusetsu has mostly a kind and gentle personality. He likes to take walks around the city to calm his mind and to think about his artwork. Because of his artist background he likes to get creative with things and becomes very curious in anything unusual. It takes a lot for him to become upset but when he does he becomes very serious.
Mokusetsu is very loyal to his friends and will do everything he can to help them and their goals. He will not make a promise unless he truly means it. When he sets his mind on something he will see it through to the end to the point of stubbornness. In cases that do reach that point, it becomes more of a fault for him.
When he is working on his artwork he puts most of his attention on making the prints than on what's around him. There are times when Suiko will have to slap him on the head to snap him back into reality.

Likes: Warm tea, okonomiyaki, sweets, new carving tools, festivals, background noise, long walks around the area
Dislikes: Being broke, silence, pickled food, breaking any of his carving tools

History:
Mokusetsu was a member of a samurai family when he was young. At 7 he showed interest in artwork and printing and decided to join the Machie art school, known for their unique banner-sized prints. For 13 years he worked and trained with the master of the Machie School. During that time he made friends with the master's daughters, Suiko and Hanabi.
Suiko's father passed away, leaving Mokusetsu, Suiko, and Hanabi as the last members of the Art School. Before he died, he dealt with a terrible debt so it wouldn't trouble Suiko and Hanabi. In the end, he had to sell nearly everything including the school.
Recently Hanabi came down with a terrible illness and needs medicine. To make matters worse, the medicine is very expensive. Now that the three of them have very little money left, they need to earn more if they hope to buy Hanabi's medicine.
Mokusetsu, Suiko, and Hanabi are now going to SDL in hopes of opening a new shop, finding a new home, and to earn money for Hanabi's medicine.

History of the Machie School:
To help in their production of the banner-size prints, the Machie School made large woodcutting tools to save them time and energy. The tools required plenty of exercise and stamina if the artist wanted to use them for long periods of time. They also required proper control so that the artist would not ruin the woodblock. To help in their carving, part of the school's training included spear exercises.

Weapons and Equipment:
Mokusetsu's weapon is actually one of his usual art tools, his large woodblock cutting blades and handle. He can use it similar to using a spear and a club. He carries around the other "spearheads" with him incase his spear tip breaks off. Mokusetsu likes to use this as his weapon as he can change between 5 different "spearheads" and attack with the back of the spearheads like a club.
Some of his other equipment includes a large baren (a rubbing tool used for Japanese print making), which can be used as a small shield. Currently Mokusetsu has not figured out how to carry the baren with him at all times so he only brings it to duels he has an appointment with or when he plans to start a duel.
Mokusetsu also has a hidden defense in his large left sleeve. Tucked away inside the sleeve are small blocks of wood intended for printmaking. Mokusetsu made this and joked about making it in case, "inspiration struck in the midst of battle." The woodblocks provide a small defense for him and can block most physical attacks and small weapons. Unfortunately if the opponent is very strong and/or skilled with a blade, the woodblocks will be of little help and Mokusetsu risks damaging (or losing) his left arm. The woodblocks reach from the end of his sleeve to his elbow.

Extra Notes:
- Kiki does open his eyes sometimes but not often. If you have seen Slayer's Next, think of Xellos.
- He has a pack attached to the back of his sash. The pack contains his extra spearheads, some pigments, and ink.
- He is ambidextrous but prefers his right.
